IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/mam,
I am writing this to express my disappointment regarding the course I took this semester but was not able to complete because of my hectic schedule.
Let me explain my situation. The subject I am enrolled in is in the evening, as I want to reduce my burden for next semester. But the problem that has arisen lately is managing both studies and my job altogether. Moreover, the funds I have for my basic necessities are getting over. So I am focusing more on my shift rather than studies.
The endpoint I come up with is to drop my evening course. Additionally, working a full-time job to gather some money for my next year. This is the only way to manage everything for me right now. Also, I am open to any suggestions you have for me to address this situation. Looking forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Yash.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the situation, stating your intention to defer, and asking for advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding your financial situation is a bit vague, and the request for advice is quite brief. To reach a higher band, you should expand slightly on how the course could be managed differently or ask more specific questions about the deferral process, such as whether your fees can be transferred to the next term.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'Also' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or abrupt. For example, the sentence 'The endpoint I come up with is to drop my evening course' is slightly awkward in its phrasing and connection to the previous paragraph. Improving the flow between sentences by using a wider variety of linking words or referencing techniques would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly. Phrases like 'hectic schedule' and 'basic necessities' are used correctly. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'The endpoint I come up with' and 'getting over' (when referring to funds running out). These do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions that are appropriate for a formal business context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'I am writing this to express my disappointment regarding the course I took this semester but was not able to complete' is a bit clunky. Additionally, 'managing both studies and my job altogether' is slightly redundant. There are also minor punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'Dear Sir/mam' (should be 'Sir/Madam'). Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring higher accuracy would help you achieve a higher band.
