IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you about discontinue the course beacuse of my busy schedule.

I am pursuing my masters in computer and it is my final year. Due to my busy schedule and regular classes I will not be able to continue the course.

Therefore, I am planning to do self-study, so that I will be in touch with the course and after completing my studies I will join the course again without any inconvinience.

I would like to know your suggestion about the situation that should I continue with the course or drop it out and start it in the next term.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all three bullet points: it explains the situation, states the intention to postpone, and asks for advice. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which severely limits the development of ideas. Because the letter is only 108 words, the explanation of the situation and the request for advice are quite brief and lack the necessary detail to fully satisfy the task requirements. To improve, you must expand on your points by providing more context or specific details about your schedule or the course.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used, though the paragraphs are very short due to the limited word count. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Therefore' and 'Due to', but the overall flow is somewhat mechanical. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more varied linking words and ensure that your ideas are connected more fluidly across longer, more developed paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. There are some errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'discontinue' used incorrectly as a verb in this context ('to discontinue' or 'discontinuing' would be better) and 'inconvinience' (spelled 'inconvenience'). The range of vocabulary is limited, and there is little attempt to use more sophisticated or topic-specific language. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise academic or professional terms would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'inform you about discontinue' (should be 'inform you that I must discontinue') and 'drop it out' (should be 'drop out'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the clarity of your message. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of phrasal verbs to improve your accuracy.
