ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
My name is Ramanjot Singh, I am enrolled in "Cooking Course" for weekly evening batch from 7 P:M to 9 P:M which will start from 1st September. I regret to inform that I am not able to join the course in coming month.
Due to my work tour which is also going to start in 15 days from now, I will be travelling for next three months. I will be busy with my work schedule and not able to spare the time for lessons.
However, I can renroll by next year with new batch and same timings. This can benefit me as your insitute will introduce new cusine that I can fit in.
Lastly, I would like to ask for an advice from the centre to analyse my issue and suggest me an alternative for the issue that it will not make an impact on my pocket.
I am looking forawrad to hear back from you soon with suitable solution.
Yours Truly,
Ramanjot Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly explained your situation regarding the work tour, stated your intention to defer the course to next year, and requested advice regarding the financial implications. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, you could provide slightly more detail in the explanation of your work tour to make the situation feel more concrete, and ensure the request for advice is phrased more naturally. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'Lastly' to transition between ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is always explicit. For instance, the transition between your work situation and your request to re-enroll could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'enrolled', 'institute', and 'cuisine'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'renroll' instead of 're-enroll', 'cusine' instead of 'cuisine', and 'forawrad' instead of 'forward'. While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure spelling accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I regret to inform that' (missing 'you'), 'ask for an advice' (advice is uncountable), and 'the issue that it will not make an impact' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some inconsistencies with capitalization and spacing in time formats. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures and focusing on articles and prepositions will help improve your score.
