IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to explain my current situation regarding the evening course that I enrolled in recently.

Unfortunately, I have found that I am unable to continue the course because my work schedule has become much busier than I expected. In addition to my job, I also have family responsibilities, and it has become difficult for me to attend classes regularly and complete the required assignments. I do not want my performance in the course to suffer because of these commitments.

I would like to postpone my studies and take the same course next term when I expect to have a more manageable schedule. I am still very interested in completing the course and achieving good results.Could you please advise me on the best way to proceed. And tell me that what should I do next.

Thank you for your time and understanding. I look forward to your advice.

Yours faithfully,

Alfina Vahora

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work and family commitments, state your desire to postpone the course to the next term, and request advice on the procedure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, meeting the requirements of the task effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that all requests are phrased with complete grammatical accuracy, as the final request for advice was slightly repetitive and contained minor punctuation errors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the explanation of the situation to the proposed solution and the final request for advice. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition to', 'Unfortunately', and 'Therefore' (implied) are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The flow is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your train of thought. To improve, ensure that sentence-level punctuation is precise, as the lack of spacing after periods in the final paragraph slightly disrupts the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning with precision. Phrases like 'manageable schedule', 'family responsibilities', and 'performance in the course' are natural and appropriate for the context. You avoid repetition and use a formal register consistently. While the vocabulary is adequate and accurate, it remains somewhat functional. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to add nuance to your writing, such as using 'unforeseen circumstances' instead of 'busier than I expected'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of tense and modal verbs is generally good. However, there are minor errors in the final paragraph, specifically the missing question mark at the end of the request and the awkward phrasing 'tell me that what should I do next', which should be 'tell me what I should do next'. These are minor slips that do not impede communication, but they prevent a higher score. Focusing on consistent punctuation and word order in interrogative clauses will improve your accuracy.
