say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter to inform you that due the busy schedule i will not be able to do morning classes for my PSW course as I am quite at this moment due to my work. Firstly I thought that I will be able to fit in the schedule as I was thinking to resign from my first job but due to financial issue i am not able to leave my job.
I am thinking of dropping studies for this semester and would like take it for upcoming term which will ultimately easier for me because till that time I will leave my afternoon job as it is seasonal job only for 4 months. So i will prefer taking afternoon classes for next semester.
I am looking forward to take advice from you as well as you are experienced and there would be lots of studies who have gone through such circumstances. Hope to listen positive response from your side as soon as possible
Your sincerely,
Parneet kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your situation regarding your work schedule, clearly stated your intention to defer your studies to the next term, and sought advice from the course provider. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. To improve, ensure that you provide slightly more detail in your explanations; for instance, you could briefly mention the specific nature of the course or the impact of your work hours to further develop your ideas. Overall, the response is relevant and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the explanation of the problem to the proposed solution and finally the request for advice. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the first and second paragraphs could be smoother, and the use of linking words like 'consequently' or 'furthermore' would improve the flow. While the overall structure is clear, more varied cohesive devices would elevate the quality of the writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms such as 'financial issue', 'seasonal job', and 'circumstances'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'do morning classes' (should be 'attend') and 'listen positive response' (should be 'receive'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to academic or professional contexts, such as 'defer my enrollment' instead of 'dropping studies'. The range is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include missing articles (e.g., 'due to financial issue'), incorrect preposition usage ('due the busy schedule'), and capitalization errors (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that articles and prepositions are used correctly in your sentences.
