IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I will not be able to continue my digital marketing course this year.

I am a student at your institute of your evening batch which started last month. I opted for this course as it will enhance my skills to build my website for my own clothing brand. However, recently due to high volume of customers at my local shop I am unable to give adequate time to the course. I work daily at my shop and thought would take classes side by side but I think I need to focus more on handling large number of customers and to prepare their orders.

I will be very grateful to you if you can either refund my fees and enroll me in the next term or I should join the classes directly from next term and you can put my enrolment on hold.

I hope you will understand my situation and will suggest me the best option suitable for you as well as for me.

Looking forward to your response.

Yours sincerely

Jas

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your clothing business and the inability to attend the course. You also propose two potential solutions (refund or deferral) and ask for advice on the best course of action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail about the specific nature of the 'digital marketing' course or the specific challenges you are facing at your shop to further develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the explanation of the situation from the proposed solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Therefore', and 'I will be very grateful' are used to link ideas. The progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between the explanation of your business and the request for a refund is slightly more fluid, perhaps by using a more explicit linking phrase to connect the problem to the proposed solution.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'enhance my skills', 'adequate time', and 'enrolment on hold'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for a formal request. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To move into a higher band, try to incorporate more precise or less common collocations. For example, instead of 'give adequate time', you could use 'devote sufficient time', and instead of 'put my enrolment on hold', you might use 'defer my enrolment'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as 'I am a student at your institute of your evening batch' (which is slightly redundant) and 'I work daily at my shop and thought would take classes' (missing a subject 'I'). However, these errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on reducing these minor slips and incorporating a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to demonstrate greater control.
