IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Course Administrator,

I am writing to request the deferment for an evening course in Mastering Designing Skills at your institution. My name is Harsimrat Kaur and student number is 06532. Unfortunately, my schedule got quite hectic at work because of an urgent deadline given by my employer for a project. Due to this, I am unable to attend the course this semester.

This project is crucial for my career growth and for better experience in my profession as well. However, this project is for only three months, after that I will be able to focus on my studies more freely. Currently, my plans is to complete this with pure dedication and determination.

In view of this situation, kindly give me suggestions about the current tasks at my office. I would also like to take admission in the coming term, please advise me about the procedure.

Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to your reply in this regard.

Yours faithfully,

Harsimrat Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your situation clearly, stated your intention to defer to the next term, and asked for advice regarding the procedure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that all requests are logically connected; for instance, asking for advice about 'current tasks at my office' is slightly confusing in this context, as the administrator is likely only concerned with your course enrollment, not your workplace duties.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately,' 'However,' and 'In view of this situation' to link your ideas. While the progression is clear, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is easy to follow for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'deferment,' 'institution,' and 'dedication.' There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'take admission,' which is less natural than 'enroll' or 'register.' Additionally, 'better experience' is a bit vague. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but to achieve a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and a slightly more sophisticated range of academic or professional vocabulary to suit the context of an evening course enrollment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'my plans is' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'the deferment for an evening course' (article usage). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. You have good control over punctuation and sentence boundaries. To improve, focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent use of articles, as these small errors currently prevent the writing from being considered consistently error-free.
