IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern regarding the course that I have enrolled in an evening batch, but due to some reasons I'm unable to continue it.

I am pursuing my master's in physiotherapy, so I have to do one research project as per educational curriculum. I wasn't aware that the data collection and statistical analysis have to completed in the first year of graduation. Therefore, I won't get enough time to continue the course, which I have enrolled in the evening batch recently.

I have already paid the fees, therefore, I would like to take the course next term instead. For the initial three months, I will be in another city as a part of data collection, so I cannot focus on my study for these months. After that, I will definitely continue my course as per convenience.

I would be really appreciated if you could give a better suggestion for a current situation as per your knowledge.

Looking forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Hardik

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your master's degree and the conflict with your research project. You state your intention to defer the course to the next term and appropriately request advice on how to handle the fees or the enrollment status. The tone is consistently formal and appropriate for a letter to an educational institution. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, ensuring the reader understands your request without ambiguity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your narrative. You use cohesive devices such as 'therefore', 'as a part of', and 'after that' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to move beyond basic connectors. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the explanation of your situation from your proposed solution and request for advice.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly. Phrases like 'pursuing my master's', 'data collection', and 'statistical analysis' are accurate and relevant to the context. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'give a better suggestion for a current situation', which sounds slightly unnatural. However, the vocabulary is generally precise enough to communicate your needs without difficulty. To reach a higher band, focus on using more idiomatic expressions or precise collocations related to formal correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if you could give' and relative clauses. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the course that I have enrolled in an evening batch' (should be 'the evening course I enrolled in') and 'have to completed' (should be 'have to be completed'). Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the formal tone is maintained throughout the letter.
