IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing to inform you that unfortunately I will be unable to attend the evening course I have joined recently to learn French. I have found out that my work schedule is really busy due to which I will not be able to give enough time to the course. Considering my current financial situation, I need to save some money for my daily expenses and other needs. Therefore, I can not leave my job or work less hours.

However, I would like to postpone this course to the next six months or a year, so that I can save money now by working extra and give my full time to French after. Meanwhile, I will be focusing on learning basis through watching a youtube videos.

Finally, I would really appreciate if you could guide me to the right path in this situation. Please update me if you have better solution for this matter.

Thank you for your consideration and I will be awaiting for your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Raj.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your work-related situation, stated your intention to postpone the course, and requested advice on how to proceed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, you could provide more specific details regarding the course name or your student ID to make the request more professional and realistic. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, ensuring the reader understands your requirements immediately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use paragraphing effectively to separate your situation from your request. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Therefore', and 'Meanwhile' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your train of thought. To reach a higher band, ensure that your referencing is precise; for instance, 'this matter' is clear, but ensure that all pronouns consistently refer back to the intended nouns without ambiguity.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'inform you', 'financial situation', and 'prompt response' are appropriate for a formal context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'learning basis' (should be 'the basics') and 'a youtube videos' (article error). You rely on some common phrasing, and incorporating more precise collocations would elevate your score. For example, instead of 'give enough time', you could use 'dedicate sufficient time'. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly without any misunderstanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'work less hours' (should be 'fewer hours') and 'I will be awaiting for' (the verb 'await' does not take the preposition 'for'). Additionally, 'postpone this course to the next six months' is slightly unnatural; 'defer my enrollment until next term' would be more accurate. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of prepositions with specific verbs.
