IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to advise that I would not be able to continue my French course in this term due to the timing of classes is not matching my schedule.
Actually, I am currently working in a evening shift as a Cashier at Walmart Canada from 2pm-10pm. Thus, I would not be able to attend my classes as the course schedule is 4pm-7pm. Additionally, I want to provide my proper concentration and dedication to this course as learning French is essential for my higher studies and future prospects. Therefore, i rather chose not to continue in this term.
However, please let me know if there is any slot available in morning course. I would greatly appreciate if you could change my schedule from evening to morning classes. Otherwise, I would like to get my course deferred to next term for morning batch if possible.
Please advise if there would be any additional fee or documentation required for this process.
I hope you would consider my application and I am looking forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Navjot Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your situation regarding your work schedule, stated your preference for a transfer or deferral, and requested advice on the necessary procedures. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of the conflict is slightly more concise, as the current explanation is a bit repetitive. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You have used appropriate paragraphing to separate your explanation from your requests. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Therefore', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader through your points. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve further, ensure that the transition between your current work situation and your request for a deferral is slightly more seamless, as the shift between paragraphs is currently a bit abrupt.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'prospects', 'deferred', and 'dedication' appropriately. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'advise that I would not be able to' (should be 'inform you that I will not be able to') and 'provide my proper concentration' (should be 'devote my full attention'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of collocations would help elevate the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'due to the timing of classes is not matching' (should be 'due to the fact that the class timing does not match') and 'i rather chose' (should be 'I would rather choose' or 'I have decided'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the lowercase 'i'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause confusion for the reader. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization will improve your accuracy.
