IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you that I recently enrolled in the Advanced Computer evening course at your institute. However, due to increased responsibilities at work, I am no longer able to attend the classes regularly and, therefore, would not be able to continue the course at this time.

I would therefore like to postpone my studies when my work demands would be less stressful. I am planning to enroll in the next term as that would the appropriate time for me to study.

Also, I would appreciate if you could advise me on the procedure for reenrollment. Are there any forms need to be fill or do I have to pay any additional fees or charges to postpone the course to next term.

I look forward to hearing from you and would appreciate your guidance on the whole process.

Yours faithfully,

Muskan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work responsibilities, state your intention to postpone the course to the next term, and ask relevant questions about the re-enrollment procedure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail in your explanation of the work situation to further develop the ideas, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'therefore', and 'Also' to link your ideas. The transition between the explanation of your situation and your request for information is smooth. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect sentences more fluidly, as the current structure is somewhat straightforward.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enrolled', 'responsibilities', 'postpone', and 'procedure' correctly. The language is formal and fits the context of a letter to an institute. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations (e.g., instead of 'work demands would be less stressful', you could use 'workload becomes more manageable').

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. However, there are a few grammatical slips, such as 'Are there any forms need to be fill' (should be 'that need to be filled') and 'postpone the course to next term' (missing 'the'). Despite these minor errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement and correct passive voice construction in your questions.
