IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you that I recently enrolled in the Advanced Computer evening course at your institute. However, due to increased responsibilities at work, I am no longer able to attend the classes regularly and, therefore, would not be able to continue the course at this time.

I would therefore like to postpone my studies until my workload becomes less demanding. I am planning to enroll in the next term, as that would be a more suitable time for me to continue my studies.

I would also appreciate if you could advise me on the procedure for re-enrollment. Could you please let me know whether I need to complete any forms or pay any additional fees to move the course until next term?

I look forward to hearing from you and would appreciate your guidance on the whole process.

Yours faithfully,

Muskan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work responsibilities, state your intention to postpone the course to the next term, and appropriately ask for advice regarding the re-enrollment procedure. The tone is consistently formal and appropriate for a letter to an institute. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, meeting all requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the body paragraphs explain the situation and request information, and the conclusion provides a polite closing. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'therefore', and 'as well as' are used naturally to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for a formal letter. You use precise collocations such as 'increased responsibilities', 'postpone my studies', and 'more suitable time'. While the vocabulary is functional and fits the context well, it remains somewhat standard. To reach the highest bands, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated or varied synonyms for common phrases, but the current range is more than sufficient for a clear and professional communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The grammar is highly accurate with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate control over modal verbs ('would like to', 'could you please') and conditional structures ('whether I need to...'). There are no noticeable grammatical errors, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. The sentence construction is varied, which contributes to the overall readability and professional tone of the letter.
