ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope you find this letter in good spirits.
I am indeed sorry to inform you that I will have to postpone the course ( basic computer skills CS3367) for this term as my uncle has encountered a serious health situation and as I live with him it is my responsibility to look after him.
I took a long time to think about changing my decision but I could not as I am going to move to the hospital with my uncle to look after him for a month until my parents show up. Therefore, it will not be possible for me to travel as the hospital is located outside.
Please consider my urgent request to let me know how I can proceed ahead to procced with registration process for the next term. Moreover, I will be grateful if you suggest any better plan which is available for me.
I look forward to talking to you soon.
Best regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your uncle's health, state your desire to postpone the course to the next term, and ask for advice on the registration process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the situation is slightly more concise to allow for a more sophisticated discussion of the requested advice or future arrangements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the situation from the request. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore' and 'Moreover' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is clear throughout the letter, and the reader can easily follow your train of thought. To improve, try to vary the cohesive devices used to connect sentences, as some of the current links are quite standard.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'postpone', 'responsibility', and 'urgent request'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'proceed ahead to procced with' (redundant and misspelled) and 'the hospital is located outside' (which is vague). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I hope you find this letter in good spirits' (the standard idiom is 'I hope this letter finds you in good spirits') and 'until my parents show up' (which is slightly informal). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are some minor slips in sentence construction. The errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more consistent control over complex structures.
