IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to request a deferral to next semester due to unforeseen circumstances.

After registration, I found out that my office is holding a workplace workshops for the employees. The workshops are starting next month and will be held in the evenings after office hours. Moreover, the attendance is mandatory for all employees. Therefore, I cannot attend the evening classes.

Due to this situation, I want to take the same course which is Business Management in the next semester. I have enrolled in the course because I want a promotion at my workplace which requires the certification. Additionally, I want to improve my skills and education for future opportunities.

I would like your help to arrange a deferral for the next term in the same course. My student ID is [redacted phone]. I hope you understand my situation and help me with a solution. I look forward to your response!

Kind regards,

Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the situation regarding the mandatory workplace workshops, stated your intention to defer to the next semester, and requested advice on the process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your circumstances and your goals. The purpose of the letter is clear from the opening sentence, and the request for assistance is explicitly stated. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the body paragraphs explain the situation and the desired outcome, and the conclusion provides the necessary details and a polite closing. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'Additionally' effectively to link your sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth, making the letter easy to follow for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning precisely. Phrases like 'unforeseen circumstances', 'mandatory for all employees', and 'arrange a deferral' are well-chosen and appropriate for a formal context. There is a minor error in 'workplace workshops' (plural/singular mismatch), but this does not impede communication. You have used a good mix of general and topic-specific vocabulary, which allows you to express your situation clearly and professionally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You show good control over a variety of sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and you use complex structures effectively, such as 'I have enrolled in the course because I want a promotion...'. There is a minor grammatical slip in 'my office is holding a workplace workshops', where the plural 'workshops' should follow 'a' or be used without the article. However, these are rare, non-systematic errors that do not affect the clarity of your message. Your punctuation is accurate throughout the letter.
