IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you find this letter in good spirits.

I am indeed sorry to inform you that I will have to postpone the course (basic computer skills CS3367) for this term as my uncle has encountered a serious health situation and as I live with him it is my responsibility to look after him.

I took a long time to think about changing my decision but I could not as I am going to move to the hospital with my uncle to look after him for a month until my parents show up. Therefore, it will not be possible for me to travel as the hospital is located outside.

Please consider my urgent request to let me know how I can proceed ahead to with the registration process for the next term. Moreover, I will be grateful if you suggest any better plan which is available for me.

I look forward to talking to you soon.

Best regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the situation regarding your uncle's health, stated your intention to postpone the course to the next term, and requested advice on the registration process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an educational institution. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your circumstances and your specific needs. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific course requirements or your previous engagement with the material to further demonstrate your commitment.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore' and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'postpone the course', 'urgent request', and 'registration process'. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks the variety and sophistication required for higher bands. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, but the language remains somewhat basic. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common synonyms to express your situation with greater nuance and stylistic flair.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'proceed ahead to with the registration process' (a redundant 'to' and 'with') and 'suggest any better plan which is available for me' (which could be more naturally phrased). Punctuation is generally correct, though the opening salutation 'Dear Sir,' should be followed by a comma and a new line. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more consistent control over complex structures.
