IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you find this letter in good spirits.

I am indeed sorry to inform you that I will have to postpone the course (basic computer skills CS3367) for this term as my uncle has encountered a serious health situation. As I live with him, it is my responsibility to look after him.

I took a long time to think about changing my decision but I could not as I am going to move to the hospital with my uncle to look after him for a month until my parents show up. Therefore, it will not be possible for me to travel as the hospital is located outside.

Please consider my urgent request to let me know how I can proceed with the registration process for the next term. Moreover, I will be grateful if you suggest any better plan which is available for me.

I look forward to talking to you soon.

Best regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your uncle's health, state your intention to postpone the course to the next term, and ask for advice on the registration process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. No parts of the prompt were omitted, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the requested scenario.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Therefore' and 'Moreover' to link ideas effectively. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. However, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'encountered a serious health situation' and 'postpone the course' are accurate and appropriate for the context. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or less common collocations. For example, instead of 'took a long time to think', you could use 'carefully considered my options'. Overall, the vocabulary is functional and fits the formal tone of the letter well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free and easy to understand. There are minor issues, such as the phrasing 'the hospital is located outside', which is slightly vague, and 'I hope you find this letter in good spirits', which is a slightly non-standard variation of the common 'I hope this letter finds you well'. Despite these minor slips, your control over grammar and punctuation is good, and the meaning is never obscured. You show a good grasp of tense usage throughout the letter.
