IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Course administrator,

I am writing this letter to inform you regarding my current situation regarding an evening course in which i have enrolled lately. I am currently working as a Subway supervisor and when i took this course i informed my manger that i would not be able to do evening shift during my upcoming course; However, my colleague recently had an emergency and she went to India and now i will have to cover her shift. Unfortunately, because of this reason, I regret to inform you that i would like postpone my course to next semester.

This course is crucial for career as it will provide me with the fundamental knowledge that will be allow me to get a high paying job in this competitive job market. As of now I will not be able to manage both, my job and studies, at the same time therefore I am requesting you to please enrol me for the next upcoming semester.

I would be tankful if you could give any advice on my studies as well as on my current situation.

yours faithfully,

Nitin.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your situation regarding the shift change at work, stated your intention to postpone the course to the next semester, and requested advice on how to handle the situation. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course administrator. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the context of your request. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are addressed with equal depth; your explanation of the work situation is clear, but the request for advice could be slightly more specific to show a higher level of engagement with the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Unfortunately', and 'therefore' to connect your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the explanation of your work situation and the importance of the course could be improved with more sophisticated linking phrases. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of your request. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further to avoid repetitive sentence structures and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'crucial', 'fundamental knowledge', and 'competitive job market'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'lately' (which should be 'recently' in this context) and 'tankful' (a spelling error for 'thankful'). Additionally, 'will be allow me' is a grammatical error that impacts the precision of your vocabulary. To achieve a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your spelling is accurate, as these small slips prevent the vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'sophisticated'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully convey your meaning, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include the lowercase 'i' instead of 'I', the incorrect verb form in 'will be allow me', and punctuation issues such as the semicolon usage before 'However'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, consistent capitalization, and ensuring that complex verb phrases are constructed correctly. Proofreading for these common slips will significantly improve your accuracy.
