IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope that you are well. I am writing to tell you that I have very hectic schedule so I can not continue with evening course this time, but I will do this in the next session.

Unfortunately, my work load has increased because two employees have gone on the vacation last week. Therefore, I have to work longer than regular hours so that we can meet the requirements of the work. This is the reason, I can not start learning this course right now.

I would like to postpone this course till next month. When my colleague will come back to work, I will work normal working hours so that I have time to spend on this course.

I would like to take an advise about the postpone process. I would like to know if I postpone the course, do I have to pay any additional money or not. I would also ask you that I need to fill the form so that no one can take my seat.

I look forward to hearing form you

Kind regards

Sandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your situation, stating your intention to postpone, and asking for advice regarding the process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is slightly repetitive, particularly regarding your work situation. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation is concise and that you clearly distinguish between the current problem and the proposed solution. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the reader is fully informed of your requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Unfortunately', and 'This is the reason' to connect your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. For example, the transition between your work situation and the request for advice is functional but could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in sentence structure would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'hectic schedule', 'postpone', and 'requirements'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'take an advise' (should be 'ask for advice') and 'gone on the vacation' (should be 'gone on vacation'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more formal alternatives for everyday phrases would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the evening course', 'the next session'), subject-verb agreement issues ('my colleague will come back'), and awkward phrasing ('I would also ask you that I need to fill the form'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy.
