IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Robert

I hope you are doing well. A few months ago, I applied for an ECE Level 2 course in your university, luckily I got my acceptance letter last week. However, this course is highly valuable for me as it is the most convenient way to get better job opportunities, due to the evening classes it might be a bit hard for me to join the course this month.

As a part time student my working hours will be affected, by evening schedule, because I am working on a contract in a clothing warehouse, which is going to be done at the end of this month. Therefore, I am requesting you to enroll me name in the next month batch, so that I can continue my course next month and concentrate on my studies without any distractions.

looking forward for your reply and waiting to begin my course next month.

your sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining your situation, stating your desired outcome, and asking for advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of your ideas is slightly inconsistent. For instance, you mention the course is 'highly valuable' but then state you cannot attend due to work, which is clear, but the request to move to the 'next month batch' is slightly confusing given the prompt asks to take the course 'next term'. Ensure you read the prompt details carefully to ensure your request aligns with the specific context provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. You use some cohesive devices like 'However', 'Therefore', and 'As a part time student', which help the flow of information. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is contained in one block. Breaking the text into distinct paragraphs for the explanation, the request, and the inquiry would significantly improve the readability and logical progression of your ideas. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'acceptance letter', 'convenient', and 'distractions'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'enroll me name' (should be 'enroll my name') and 'next month batch' (which sounds slightly unnatural). You also have a few minor errors in phrasing, such as 'which is going to be done' instead of 'which is going to be completed' or 'concluded'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'due to the evening classes it might be a bit hard' is a run-on sentence that requires better punctuation. You also have errors with prepositions and articles, such as 'in your university' (should be 'at your university') and 'looking forward for' (should be 'looking forward to'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly in the salutation and sign-off, where commas are missing or misused.
