Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am Dhvani Tailor, writing to request you regarding to carry forward the evening course of Manual Therapy to the next term.
To start with, I am a Physiotherapist and working part-time at a private clinic. I have enrolled for a Manual Therapy short course for the evening session but right now I am in a crucial situation where I am not able to continue this course. All this happened because of some financial trouble at my house. Therefore, I have to work for the full-time and I will be left with no time to attend the lecture.
Moreover, the course is very important for my future practice. Because it will teach me several hands-on techniques such as Mulligan which would assist me in the treatment planning and also to gain better health recovery.
At last, I would like to ask one question. kindly guide me for the occurred situation. How should I carry forward this course to the next term? Are there any process to follow or to fill out a form? Please help me with this.
I would be grateful if my situation will be taken into consideration. Thank you for your time. I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Dhvani Tailor.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your current situation as a physiotherapist facing financial difficulties, stated your desire to defer the course to the next term, and requested guidance on the administrative process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the situation flows more naturally into the request for deferral, as the transition between your financial issues and the course importance could be slightly more cohesive.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the situation, the importance of the course, and the request for advice. Cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the final paragraph ('the occurred situation') is a bit awkward. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would elevate the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'private clinic', 'treatment planning', and 'hands-on techniques'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'request you regarding to carry forward' (should be 'request to defer') and 'gain better health recovery' (which is slightly unnatural). While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated collocations related to academic or professional deferrals would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have enrolled for' (should be 'I enrolled in'), 'work for the full-time' (should be 'work full-time'), and 'if my situation will be taken' (should be 'if my situation could be taken'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and preposition errors throughout. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move toward a higher band.
