IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to request for a change in the term of French course which I have joined recently due to some issues I am facing because of my schedule change.

I have joined a short-term French course for beginners because French is a national language of Canada. Learning this language would aid me in my career as in many professional roles French language proficiency is a mandatory requirement.

Unfortunately, I would not be able to continue this course in this term as these days I have a very busy schedule at workplace. I work overtime hours and do not get enough time in the evening to join in-person classes. Therefore, I would like to take this course in the next term instead.

Otherwise, I can join online classes if there is an option of available to join virtual classes. However, the quality of education might be compromised in this scenario. Could you please advice what I could do in this situation?

Hoping for a prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

Iqbal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your schedule, state your desire to defer the course to the next term, and ask for advice regarding potential alternatives. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your circumstances and your request. To reach a higher band, you could provide a slightly more specific reason for the schedule change, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately,' 'Therefore,' and 'However' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the explanation of the situation from the proposed solutions and the request for advice. The flow is natural and consistent throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'professional roles,' 'French language proficiency,' and 'mandatory requirement' are used accurately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'request for a change in the term of French course' (which is slightly awkward) and 'option of available to join' (which is redundant). However, these do not impede communication. Using more precise collocations would help elevate the score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally good. There are a few minor slips, such as 'advice' used as a verb instead of 'advise' ('Could you please advice...'), and the phrasing 'the term of French course' which lacks an article. Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammatical control is sufficient for a high band score.
