IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I feel happy that I have enrolled in one of the courses at your institution, but I want to tell you that I got my schedule from my company/restaurant. According to the schedule, my job timing is 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm; because of that, I will not be available to continue the course further.

On the other hand, I would like to continue my learning in the next semester. Is it possible that I can continue with it? Or are there any other possibilities to continue my learning? Furthermore, if I have to pay an extra fee for it, then I am happy to do it. I want guidance from you as soon as possible so that I can do the needful things which will not disturb my studies again.

Thank you so much for all of your support. Let me know if you want to discuss anything with me.

Kind Regards,

ABC

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work schedule, express your desire to defer the course to the next term, and politely request advice on the procedure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an institution. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your circumstances and your specific request. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and all requirements of the task are met in a professional manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate the explanation of your situation from your request for advice. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'because of that' are used to link sentences and ideas effectively. The structure is coherent, and the flow of information is easy to follow. The opening and closing salutations are appropriate for the formal context of the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and conveys your meaning clearly. You use functional phrases like 'enrolled in', 'institution', and 'do the needful'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate, it is somewhat functional and lacks a wider range of less common or more sophisticated collocations. For instance, 'do the needful things' is a bit informal and slightly awkward in this context. Expanding your range to include more precise academic or professional terminology would help elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. There are minor issues, such as 'I feel happy that I have enrolled', which is slightly unnatural; 'I am pleased to have enrolled' would be more formal. Additionally, 'my job timing is' could be improved to 'my working hours are'. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your control over grammar and punctuation is solid, and the errors do not impede communication.
