Student answer (Band 7.0)
Hello Catherine,
I hope you are doing well!
Its pleasure to have you as program coordinator for my program and always go the extra miles to guide us in academics. Currently, I am semester 5 student in the Business Administration Accounting program. I have been registered for all six courses as mentioned in academic schedule and all professors are also exceptional and experienced in courses. However, the Financial Accounting courses by Ron Wilson at Friday evening have been exhausting for me as I have 2 lectures before this course with break of just 15 minutes between them. Moreover, prof. Wilson does not give break in 3 hour's lecture as he completes lecture early without break which is great but exhausting too.
Thus, I would like to make request for dropping this course and taking it in the Fall semester as it is not mandatory course. Further, I would also like to have suggestion from you regarding this decision and also want you to suggest any alternatives of dropping course like either change in schedule of course or change in professor. kindly, let me know about the feasible solution for the above mentioned situation at your earliest convenience.
Yours Sincerely,
Devam Modi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your situation regarding the exhausting schedule, stated your desire to defer the course to the next term, and requested advice on alternative solutions. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a program coordinator. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the request for advice is slightly more distinct from the request to drop the course, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical progression. You start with a polite opening, move to the explanation of the problem, and conclude with your request and a professional sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the context from the specific request. You use some cohesive devices like 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Thus' to link your ideas. To improve, ensure that referencing is more precise; for example, 'this decision' could be more clearly linked to the specific act of deferring. Overall, the flow of information is smooth and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for an academic context, such as 'program coordinator', 'academics', 'mandatory', and 'earliest convenience'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'make request for' (should be 'make a request to') and 'alternatives of dropping' (should be 'alternatives to dropping'). While these do not impede communication, they prevent the use of vocabulary from being fully natural or sophisticated. Expanding your use of collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('I am semester 5 student' should be 'a semester 5 student'), incorrect pluralization ('3 hour's lecture' should be 'a 3-hour lecture'), and minor punctuation issues. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause confusion for the reader. To improve, focus on article usage and consistent verb tense agreement. The majority of your sentences are clear and convey the intended meaning effectively, which is a strength.
