IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I had enrolled in an evening course thinking that i would be able to manage my activities promptly. However, recently i found out that i am quiet busy with work and taking care of my family.

I humbly request to take same course next term as for it's tricky to handle both simultaneously. I have to take care of my siblings after work as my father had a serious accident and got a crack on right leg and injures all over body, doctor said that he needs 3 months bed-rest at least and i have to pick and drop my siblings from school as well.

Also the reason i want to continue studying is to get better opportunities at work for better pay and improve my family lifestyle. Would you please give me some advice regarding my situation to balance studies while working and taking care of family as everything is equally important to me.

Yours faithfully,

Meet Brahmbhatt.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your situation regarding the evening course, state your desire to defer to the next term, and ask for advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven; while you provide specific details about your father's accident, the request for advice is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your personal circumstances and the request for advice is more explicitly linked to the course requirements or institutional policies.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, body, and conclusion. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Also', and 'as well', which help link your sentences. However, the transition between the explanation of your father's accident and the request for advice could be smoother. Some sentences are slightly disjointed, and the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'simultaneously', 'opportunities', and 'lifestyle'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'got a crack on right leg' (should be 'fractured his right leg') and 'injures all over body' (should be 'injuries all over his body'). Additionally, 'quiet busy' is a spelling error for 'quite busy'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary and better attention to common collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as the failure to capitalize 'i', missing articles (e.g., 'take same course'), and awkward phrasing like 'as for it's tricky'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences. While the meaning is clear, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
