IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have recently enrolled in an evening course at your institute, however due to my hectic work schedule I would like to take that course in next term intake.

Because I joined Apollo hospital as an intern last month, it requires me to work all the evenings. Therefore, I am not able to attend in person class during my internship period. As a result, I have decided to enroll in next term instead. Initially I though that course timing would be in the morning, but after getting an email from college regarding evening classes, I was disappointed. I would like to do some self-study until I get a chance to enroll in next term, as this course plays a crucial role in getting pharmacy license in Canada.

I would like to get some advices about this situation, if you could suggest me alternative class timing or can offer me a different course. Also I would be delighted, if you could allow me to join classes online rather than in person.

I look forward to waiting for your advice.

Yours faithfully,

Jack.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your situation regarding the new internship at Apollo hospital, stated your intention to defer to the next term, and requested advice regarding alternative timings or online options. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your constraints and your desired outcome. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of the situation is concise, as the transition between your work schedule and your disappointment regarding the course timing could be more smoothly integrated to maintain a professional focus.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the problem to the proposed solution and finally to the request for advice. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, the explanation, and the specific requests. You use cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'As a result', and 'Initially' to link your ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the final sentence, 'I look forward to waiting for your advice', is a bit awkward; a more standard closing like 'I look forward to hearing from you' would improve the flow. Overall, the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enrolled', 'internship', and 'crucial role' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'in next term intake' (should be 'in the next term's intake') and 'get some advices' (advice is an uncountable noun). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of more sophisticated collocations that would push the score into the higher bands. Focusing on accurate usage of uncountable nouns and more formal phrasing will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if you could suggest me alternative class timing'. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'attend in person class' (should be 'attend in-person classes') and 'I though that' (should be 'I thought that'). Additionally, 'suggest me alternative class timing' is slightly unnatural; 'suggest alternative class timings to me' would be better. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions in formal writing.
