IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to request an extension of the start date of my course.
I am enrolled in your college in the office administration course. However, I have a tight schedule nowadays because I just entered into the motherhood phase. It is quite challenging for me to attend the evening classes, since, my child requires my attention. When I got enrolled in this course, I was not aware of such challenges of motherhood journey.
I request you if you could extend the commence date of the course. Next term would be best for me because during that time my child would have the supervision of her grandparents and I would be free to emphasize on my studies.
I would be pleased if you could provide me some suggestions to tackle this situation such as an alternative timing of this course that could best suit my hectic schedule.
I hope you would understand my situation and provide me with best solutions. Hope to hear from you very soon.
Yours faithfully,
ABC

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your situation regarding the motherhood phase, stated your desire to defer to the next term, and requested advice on alternative arrangements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of the situation is slightly more concise to allow for more depth in the request for advice. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'since', and 'because' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. For example, the connection between your current situation and the request for advice could be strengthened with better linking phrases. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of your request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'commence', 'supervision', and 'hectic schedule'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'emphasize on my studies' (should be 'focus on') and 'motherhood phase' (which is slightly unnatural). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat functional. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid slightly awkward phrasing. The errors present do not impede communication, which is a positive aspect of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I would be pleased if you could provide me some suggestions'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I request you if you could extend' (which is syntactically incorrect; 'I would like to request an extension' would be better) and 'the commence date' (should be 'commencement date'). Punctuation is generally accurate, though there is an unnecessary comma after 'since' in the second paragraph. The errors do not cause confusion, but they do limit the score to a 6.0.
