say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you about my evening course, in which i am enrolled and I found that I am too busy in that time with my work. I would like to this course in next term instead. I would like to explain the situation and suggest a possible solution.
When I joined the course, I had enough free time to attend this evening class. However, my working hours have increased recently, and I also have some family responsibility. Therefore, I am finding it very difficult to attend class regularly and complete my studies on time.
I would like to continue same course in next term instead of leaving it completely. I am still interested in the course and I believe that next term I will have enough free time to study.
Could you please give me some advise about what should i do in this situation? If, I can move my enrollement to next term and weather i need to any extra pay fee.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Dhruv

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your situation regarding increased work hours and family responsibilities, clearly stated your desire to defer your studies to the next term, and asked for advice regarding the administrative process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that your opening sentence is more concise; for example, instead of saying 'I am writing this letter to inform you about my evening course, in which i am enrolled', you could simply state, 'I am writing to request a deferral for my evening course due to unforeseen circumstances.' Your ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the explanation of the situation to the request and finally the inquiry. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Therefore', and 'Instead of' to link your sentences effectively. To reach a higher band, try to vary your transitions further and ensure that referencing is precise. For instance, in the final paragraph, the phrasing 'If, I can move my enrollement' is slightly disjointed; using a more formal structure like 'I would appreciate your guidance on whether it is possible to transfer my enrollment' would improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully conveying your meaning. Phrases like 'enrolled', 'regularly', and 'interested in the course' are used correctly. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'advise' (which should be the noun 'advice') and 'pay fee' (which is better expressed as 'pay an additional fee'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to academic administration, such as 'defer my enrollment' or 'administrative procedures'. Your current vocabulary is sufficient for the task but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I would like to this course' (missing the verb 'take'), 'same course' (should be 'the same course'), and 'weather i need to any extra pay fee' (incorrect word order and usage of 'whether'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the lowercase 'i'. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of conjunctions. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures will help you achieve a higher score.
