IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request a deferral to next term for my evening course that I recently enrolled in your university. I was really excited to join classes next month. But suddenly, an unforeseen family urgency has come up. Therefore, I would not be able to continue.
Actually, my father got transferred to another city for next few months as he serves in military. His job placements change frequently. My whole family is moving next month so I can not stay alone at home. Because I am unable to handle all along.
I have been interested in Graphics for many years. Unfortunately, due to financial conditions I could not take course. It closely aligns with my current job at visual presenter at an IT software company. Hence, it is a great opportunity for me to improve my skills and grow professionally.
Your suggestion would be appreciated on what I should do to hold my seat for next term. What criteria to follow and documents needed to enroll in next term course?
I hope you understand. I look forward to a prompt response from you.
Yours sincerely,
Raman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your situation regarding the family move, stated your desire to defer your enrollment, and asked for the necessary administrative advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation is more concise; the details about your father's military career and your interest in graphics are slightly tangential to the core request of deferring the course. Focusing more on the administrative process would have strengthened the task response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use paragraphing effectively to separate your situation from your request. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. For example, you rely heavily on simple transitions like 'But' and 'Therefore'. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in light of this' to create a smoother flow between your sentences and ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'deferral', 'unforeseen', and 'professionally'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'family urgency' (should be 'family emergency') and 'handle all along' (should be 'manage on my own'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. Expanding your range of formal expressions would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'enrolled in your university' (should be 'enrolled at'), 'next few months' (should be 'the next few months'), and 'visual presenter at an IT software company' (should be 'as a visual presenter'). Additionally, the sentence 'Because I am unable to handle all along' is a sentence fragment. While your meaning is clear, these frequent minor errors in articles, prepositions, and sentence structure prevent a higher band score.
