IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you . I am writing to request to defer my course's enrollment for next term.

I am no longer able to attend the classes for my evening skill enhancement course because of unexpected change in schedule. Our soccer team is selected in the national sports competition and the competition is in one month, so our coach decided to add an extra practice session in the evening till the event.

Even though, I have to wake up early in the morning for my college studies. Since this is my last semester of college, I have to concentrate on that as well. Therefore, combining college studies and soccer practice, I barely have any time left for my evening course. But, I would love to continue my classes from next term for same course.

Could you please advice me with the best way to proceed with this situation? let me know if there are any transfer fee or penalty.

Thank you for understanding my situation and taking my request of transfer into consideration. I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Rajveer Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the situation regarding your soccer team and college studies, stated your intention to defer to the next term, and requested advice regarding the transfer process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor grammatical slips do not distract from the clarity of your message, but overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use paragraphing appropriately to separate the explanation of your situation from your request for advice. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Even though', and 'Since' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the referencing is generally clear. To improve, try to vary your linking words further to ensure a more natural flow between sentences, as some connections feel a bit repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'skill enhancement', 'unexpected change', and 'take into consideration'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'advice' (which should be the verb 'advise' in your sentence) and 'transfer fee' (which should be pluralized as 'transfer fees'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations and ensuring correct word forms will help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'I hope this letter finds you .' is missing an object, 'Our soccer team is selected' should be 'has been selected', and 'the competition is in one month' is slightly unnatural compared to 'is taking place in one month'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage to improve accuracy.
