IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you. I am writing to request to defer my course's enrollment for the next term.

I am no longer able to attend the classes for my evening skill enhancement course because of an unexpected change in schedule. Our soccer team has been selected in the national sports competition and the competition is in one month, so our coach decided to add an extra practice session in the evening till the event.

Additionally, I have to wake up early in the morning for my college studies. Since this is my last semester of college, I have to concentrate on that as well. Therefore, combining college studies and soccer practice, I barely have any time left for my evening course. But, I would love to continue my classes from next term for the same course.

Could you please advise me with the best way to proceed with this situation? Let me know if there is any transfer fees or penalty.

Thank you for understanding my situation and taking my request of transfer into consideration. I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Rajveer Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your situation regarding the soccer competition and college studies, stated your intention to defer to the next term, and politely requested advice on the procedure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening sentence is grammatically complete, as 'I hope this letter finds you' is missing an object (e.g., 'finds you well'). Overall, the response is purposeful and fully meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the situation to the request and finally the closing. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'Therefore,' and 'Since' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The flow of information is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your reasoning. To improve, ensure that referencing remains precise throughout; for instance, 'that' in 'concentrate on that' is slightly vague, though the context makes the meaning clear. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'skill enhancement course,' 'unexpected change in schedule,' and 'taking my request... into consideration' demonstrate a good command of formal language. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is generally standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate greater flexibility. For example, instead of 'add an extra practice session,' you might use 'intensify our training regimen.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good control of grammar, using a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. There are minor slips, such as 'is there any transfer fees' (should be 'are there any transfer fees') and the incomplete opening sentence mentioned earlier. These are non-systematic errors that do not impede communication. You have successfully used complex sentences to explain your reasons, which shows a good range. Continued attention to subject-verb agreement and sentence completeness will help you move toward a higher band.
