IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Marc,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request the letter regarding to postponing Research Analyst course to the next year because of some busy schedule.

currently, I am working with the big and reputed pharmaceutical company where last week I promoted to manager post. This is the time when I might have to stay little longer at the office or may fly overseas for the business meetings. It may be hectic for me to do both work and course at the same time, which might be overlapping for me. As a result, I cannot be able to focused on studies right now.

By thinking deeply, I decided to postpone my course and I would like to an enrollment myself next year September. This is largely because after a year, I will be learning all the roles and responsibilities of my managing post, and I can be more focused towards my further studies.

Additionally, I am looking for total refund of my fees and I would like to know more about the cancellation process of current registration.

Although, I want to cancel the course, I need your assistance before taking any final decision.

Thank you for your time and afford. I am looking forward to your response.

Best Regards,

Mathew

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points effectively. You clearly explain the situation regarding your new job responsibilities and the resulting time constraints. You state your intention to postpone the course to next year and ask for advice regarding the refund and cancellation process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully addressed all requirements of the prompt, ensuring the reader understands your position and your specific requests.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of your request, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'Additionally', and 'Although', which help to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the situation, the proposed solution, and the request for assistance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reputed', 'responsibilities', and 'postponing'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'request the letter regarding to' (should be 'request information regarding'), 'I cannot be able to focused' (should be 'I am unable to focus'), and 'afford' (should be 'effort'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and common collocations to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'last week I promoted' (should be 'I was promoted'), 'I would like to an enrollment myself' (should be 'I would like to enroll myself'), and 'cannot be able to' (a double modal error). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage issues. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your message. To improve, focus on passive voice construction and correct modal verb usage.
