explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding my inability to attend the 3d animation course that I enrolled in the day before yesterday at your institute. However, due to my hectic schedule, I will be unable to attend the evening classes.
I am working as a cartoon designer at an international company. Recently, I received three projects simultaneously. Additionally, I am required to submit these projects by the end of the month. As a result I have been working full-time in the mornings and evenings. Therefore, I will be unable to attend the course this term.
This course would be extremely beneficial to my future career. So I would request that you to allowed me to enroll in the next term course. I would appreciated if it if you could advise me on what I can do in this stination. In particular I would like to know whether I can attend the course in next term or choose a more flexible schedule that would not interfere with my work commitments.
Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to hearing from you regarding a solution.
Youre faith fully,
Bijal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your situation regarding the 3D animation course, provide a valid reason for your inability to attend due to work commitments, and explicitly ask for advice on how to proceed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an institute. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the request for advice is slightly more nuanced, though you have met the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'As a result', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the first and second paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall flow of information is easy to follow. The letter maintains a consistent tone throughout, which helps in maintaining coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'hectic schedule', 'simultaneously', and 'work commitments'. There are some minor errors, such as 'stination' (likely a typo for 'situation') and 'Youre faith fully' (incorrect spelling of 'Yours faithfully'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or precision of higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of formal closing phrases would improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that slightly distract the reader, such as 'I would request that you to allowed me' (should be 'allow me') and 'I would appreciated if it if' (should be 'I would appreciate it if'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to verb forms and auxiliary verbs after modal verbs. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band.
