Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear admin,
I hope you are doing well, this is Mahima Macwan, I am currently enrolled in Gerentology Interprofessional Practice. My seat number is 2342. I am reaching out to you in regard to discontinuing this course.
It has been rough past month, and I have been dealing with some personal issues at home, thus it feels overwhelming to continue this course. I would appreciate it if I could take a break and take this course next semester, if possible?
I continue to focus on building the strength and courage that I need to get over this hard time. My studies is as important as my mental health, and I will continue to prioritize it once everything takes place.
I would really appreciate if you could set me up with student councilor. I would also greatly appreciate your take on this situation and if there's anything else that I can do to tackle this easily and move forward with my course and everything.
Regards,
Mahima

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response covers all three bullet points effectively. You clearly explain the situation regarding your personal issues and the need to discontinue the course. You state your intention to defer to the next semester and appropriately request advice on how to proceed. The tone is consistently polite and appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully addressed all parts of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. You use some cohesive devices like 'thus' and 'in regard to', although the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of your request, making the letter easy to navigate.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'discontinuing', 'overwhelming', and 'prioritize'. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated phrasing. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, and the tone remains professional throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'My studies is as important' (should be 'are') and 'set me up with student councilor' (should be 'a student counselor'). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and accurate. The punctuation is generally correct, and the overall control of grammar is sufficient to convey your meaning without difficulty.
