IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Professor,

I hope this message finds you well. I would like to update you regarding the current course enrollment. Unfortunately, I won't be able to continue my current evening course as I have got my aunt who recently had an accident.

Her condition is critical as she has got two fractures in her leg. Doctor has suggested her for complete bed rest. Also, she doesn't have anyone except me. So, I have decide to aid her in this critical condition. Due to this reason I won't be able to continue the course further.

However, I would like to reschedule my course for next term as I won't be able to continue for this time.

Furthermore, if you have any other way we can work please advice me before rescheduling the course so that I can plan accordingly.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

Yours Sincerely,

Bhoutik

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your aunt's accident, state your intention to reschedule for the next term, and ask for advice on alternative options. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a professor. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the context and your request. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the situation is slightly more concise to allow for more sophisticated phrasing in the request section, but overall, the task is fully accomplished.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'Also' to connect your ideas. While the progression is clear, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between the personal situation and the request for advice is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some appropriate phrases like 'critical condition' and 'reschedule my course'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing, such as 'I won't be able to continue' appearing multiple times. To achieve a higher score, aim to use a wider range of vocabulary and more precise collocations. For example, instead of 'I have got my aunt', use 'my aunt has been involved in an accident'. This would demonstrate better control over natural English expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I have got my aunt who recently had an accident' (incorrect use of 'got') and 'Doctor has suggested her for complete bed rest' (missing article 'The' and incorrect preposition). Additionally, 'I have decide' should be 'I have decided'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would also help elevate your score.
