IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.0)
DEAR SIR,
I AM WRITING THIS LETTER TO INFORM YOU ABOUT MY RECENT ENROLLMENT IN EVENING COURSE. TO BE MORE CLEAR, I WOULD LIKE TO ADDRESS THAT, IT WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE ABOUT ME ATTENDING THE COURSE AS, MY HECTIC SCHEDULE WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO DO SO.
TO LET YOU KNOW THAT, I WILL BE APPEARING FOR MY CO-WORK AND I WOULD NEED TO SPEND MY ENTIRE DAY AT THE FIRM. DUE TO THIS I WOULD NOT BE AVAILABLE TO ATTEND THE COURSE CLASSES.
MOSTLY, I WILL BE RESUMING MY CLASSES IN UPCOMING SEMESTER. I ALREADY PLAN TO GIVE MY TERM FOR THIS INTERNSHIP. AS THE FIRM WHICH HAS APPROVED MY CO-WORK IS THE LEADING GIANT AND THIS COULD BE MY HALEY'S COMET, WHICH WOULD NEVER APPEAR TO BE BACK.
I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE AN ADVICE FROM YOUR END, THE RESON BEING THAT YOU HAVE AN NEUTRAL VIEW, AND CAN SEE IN WHICH DIRECTION IT WOULD BE MORE BENEFICIAL FOR ME.
HOPE TO HEAR FROM FOR YOU BACK
YOURS FAITHFULLY,
PARTH,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: it explains the situation, states the intention to defer, and requests advice. However, the tone is inconsistent and occasionally inappropriate for a formal letter. The use of the idiom 'Haley's comet' is confusing and does not fit the context of a professional internship, which detracts from the clarity of the explanation. While the purpose of the letter is clear, the development of ideas is somewhat hindered by awkward phrasing and a lack of professional register, which prevents it from reaching a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused. For example, 'To be more clear' and 'To let you know that' are unnatural transitions. The logical flow between sentences is sometimes interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as the transition into the explanation about the internship. While the overall message is understandable, the lack of smooth, natural linking devices makes the text feel disjointed in places.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary range is limited and contains several instances of unnatural collocation and misuse. Phrases like 'co-work' (likely meaning internship or full-time job) and 'Haley's comet' are used incorrectly or inappropriately for the context. There are also errors in word choice, such as 'take an advice' (advice is uncountable) and 'reson' (spelling error). While the student attempts to use more complex vocabulary, the errors are frequent enough to occasionally impede the reader's understanding of the specific situation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Common issues include incorrect preposition usage ('possible about me'), article misuse ('an neutral view'), and punctuation errors (unnecessary commas after 'that' and 'as'). Additionally, the letter is written entirely in capital letters, which is inappropriate for formal correspondence. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the high frequency of grammatical slips and punctuation errors prevents a higher score.
