IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I have enrolled in an evening course at your institution. However, due to some family commitments, I am finding it difficult to attened the class this term.

The main reason I am unable to continue the class is my family responsibilities. I have one year old daughter and currently, she needs continue a considerable amount of my time and attention. Consequently, I am struggling to attend the evening class regularly and complete the required task of the course.

Due to family responsibilities, rather than missing my class, I would prefer my class on next term instead of this term. I would like to request you that my enrollment be postponed until next term. I am keen to complete my course and would be grateful to transfer my enrollment and fees for the next term.

If you can give me any other advice to complete my course that would also be grateful for me. I would also appreciate if you could let me know whether I need to complete any formalities to postpone my course to next term.

Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Divya Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your family commitments, state your preference to defer the course to the next term, and politely ask for advice regarding the transfer process. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that all explanations are grammatically precise, as minor errors in phrasing can occasionally distract from the clarity of your request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Consequently', and 'Therefore' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the explanation of the problem to the proposed solution and finally to the request for advice. The paragraphing is sufficient and appropriate for this type of correspondence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using formal expressions such as 'inform you', 'institution', 'family commitments', and 'formalities'. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is somewhat standard. To improve, you could incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated phrasing to convey your situation. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is consistently appropriate for the formal context of the letter, ensuring that your message is conveyed clearly to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'she needs continue a considerable amount of my time' (should be 'needs a considerable amount of my time') and 'I would prefer my class on next term' (should be 'I would prefer to take my class next term'). Additionally, 'that would also be grateful for me' is an awkward construction. Despite these errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the mistakes do not impede communication.
