IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to inform you that I would not be able to continue this course in the evening.

Recently, I have been promoted in my company as an senior executive and with that my roles and responsibilities in the company has been increased. There have been times in a week that I have to do overtime at work to manage and oversee the work done by my subordinates. This is one of the primary reason for my absenteeism at the coaching centre.

However, balancing work and life altogether have become uphill task for me. Moreover, if the authorities permit me then I believe it is a much better option if I continue this course in the next batch so that I do not miss any lectures and will able to complete the course with dedication. Therefore, I want you to help me with this situation and provide me an appropriate solution. And if situation is unfavourable then perhaps I would only be able to attend it during weekends.

I would be looking forward to hearing it from you.

Regards,

Shaily Merchant

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your situation regarding your promotion and increased workload, stated your desire to defer to the next term, and requested advice on how to proceed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that your request for advice is slightly more specific, perhaps by asking about refund policies or administrative procedures for deferral, which would add further depth to your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the introduction, the explanation of the situation, and the proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' are used to link your sentences and ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more natural; for instance, the connection between your work responsibilities and your request for a weekend class could be tightened to ensure the logic is seamless. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'absenteeism', 'subordinates', and 'unfavourable' appropriately. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'an senior executive' (should be 'a senior executive') and 'balancing work and life altogether' (which is slightly redundant). While you use some less common vocabulary, there is room to incorporate more precise academic or professional collocations to enhance the sophistication of your writing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without any impediment to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement ('roles and responsibilities... has been increased' should be 'have been increased') and article usage ('an senior executive'). Additionally, 'I would be looking forward to hearing it from you' is slightly unnatural; 'I look forward to hearing from you' is the standard formal convention. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not significantly impede communication. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures will help improve your score.
