IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Enrolment team,

I hope this letter finds you well, I am writing this letter to request for deferment of my admission in Communication skill improvement course.

Unfortunately, I can not able to continue my evening classes due to some compulsory extra classes that I have to attend. My final examinations are held on 20th September, I am little bit low in two practical subjects, so my teacher organized evening classes for average students.

As I do not have enough time to manage everything at once, so want some time to recommence it after two months. Additionally, improving English communication skills is essential for better future that is why I would like to commence it right after my exam.

I will really very thank you if you could suggest me any best option which works to save my time by completing both the things together.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Looking forward for your response.

Regards,

Amandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the situation, stating your desired outcome, and asking for advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. However, the development of ideas is slightly limited. For example, while you mention needing to attend extra classes, providing a bit more detail about the conflict between the course schedule and your exam preparation would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively, and the reader understands your situation and request clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'Additionally', and 'that is why', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with sentence connectivity, such as the comma splice in the first sentence ('...finds you well, I am writing...'). Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'deferment', 'recommence', and 'consideration'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I am little bit low in two practical subjects' (which is informal and slightly unclear) and 'I will really very thank you' (which is grammatically incorrect and unnatural). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of formal collocations would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I can not able to' (should be 'I am not able to'), 'My final examinations are held' (should be 'are being held' or 'will be held'), and 'suggest me any best option' (should be 'suggest the best option'). Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as the comma splice in the opening. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs.
