IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

My name is komal and i am a science student at your campus and it is my fourth semester, and my student number is [redacted phone]. I am writing this letter to inform you about my problem related to continuing this term.

When registration for this term started I did not have any job but now I got one but the timing of shift is in evening same as my classes.

So now i decided to continue this term from next term because as you know that to manage fees and other expenses, a job is very compulsory.

I would like to request you, please, if there is any chance of getting a term break then please allow me or if you have another options such as classes in morning then let me know so i can continue my studies as per my requirements and it will be helpful for me if you do this favour for me. I will be waiting for you reply. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your new job and the conflict with your evening classes. You state your intention to defer to the next term and ask for advice regarding potential alternatives like morning classes or a term break. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that you provide a slightly more formal opening and closing, and avoid repetitive phrasing such as 'if there is any chance... then please allow me'. Overall, you have addressed the task requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression from the introduction of the problem to the proposed solution and the request for advice. Paragraphing is used, though the body of the letter could be split into two distinct paragraphs to better separate the explanation of the situation from the request for action. The use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic (e.g., 'So now', 'and'), and the flow could be improved by using more varied transition words to link your ideas more smoothly. However, the message remains easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'registration', 'semester', and 'expenses' correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'a job is very compulsory' are slightly unnatural; 'essential' or 'necessary' would be more precise. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'another options' (should be 'other options'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid basic phrasing. Your control of vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without any significant misunderstanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, you consistently fail to capitalize 'I', and there are issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'the timing of shift' should be 'the timing of my shift'). Additionally, some sentences are run-on, such as the first sentence, which contains too many clauses joined by 'and'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence boundaries and basic capitalization will significantly improve your accuracy.
