explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to let you know that I decided to get enroll in an evening course but I am quite busy these days to continue this course in this term. As I am currently doing a full-time job and I am back to home late at night. Therefore I cannot give enough time to other activities.
Furthermore, I have made a decision for this program because I believe that this will help me a lot in future. This will enhance my knowledge as well as helps in future progress. Moreover, I consider that this program might give me knowledge of various skills which I have not learnt before anywhere. This will boost my confidence and communication skills. Therefore, I will continue in the next term.
Could you please give me detailed suggestion regarding this situation. I would really appreciate it.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Kashi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining your situation, stating your intention to defer, and asking for advice. However, the development of these points is somewhat uneven. While you explain your work situation, the middle paragraph focuses heavily on the benefits of the course rather than the logistics of your request. This makes the response feel slightly repetitive. To improve, ensure that each paragraph directly serves the purpose of the letter. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the structure could be more concise to better reflect the requirements of a formal request.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the use of these connectors is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'Therefore' to start sentences. The progression of ideas is clear, but the transition between the explanation of your work schedule and the benefits of the course could be smoother. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring they are used to create a more natural flow would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'full-time job' and 'enhance my knowledge'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'get enroll' (should be 'enrolled') and 'back to home' (should be 'get home'). You also repeat the word 'knowledge' and 'future' multiple times, which limits the sophistication of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing by utilizing synonyms or rephrasing your sentences to show a wider lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I decided to get enroll' (incorrect verb form), 'I am back to home' (unnecessary preposition), and 'helps in future progress' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, 'give me detailed suggestion' should be plural ('suggestions'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. To improve, pay closer attention to verb patterns, article usage, and subject-verb agreement, and try to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentences.
