Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your situation regarding your work schedule, clearly stated your intention to defer the course to the next term, and requested advice on how to proceed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. To improve, ensure that you provide slightly more detail in your explanation to fully develop your ideas, as some parts feel a bit repetitive, such as the mention of your work schedule. Overall, you have met the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You have used paragraphing to separate your ideas, which helps the reader follow your message. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited. Phrases like 'thats why' and 'Besides' are used, but the flow could be improved with a wider range of linking words or transition phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure would benefit from more sophisticated transitions to move between the explanation of your situation and your request for advice.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some relevant phrases such as 'career changing opportunity' and 'enrolled in your evening classes'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'my scheme is too busy' (where 'schedule' would be more appropriate) and 'need of work' (which should be 'need to work'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to professional and academic contexts and ensure that collocations are natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, including punctuation issues (e.g., missing spaces after periods, 'i' not capitalized), subject-verb agreement errors, and awkward phrasing like 'I have 9 to 5 job'. Additionally, the closing 'Your faithfully' is incorrect; it should be 'Yours faithfully'. These errors occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the text. Focusing on basic sentence construction, capitalization, and proofreading for common slips will help improve your score in this area.
