Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all three bullet points: it explains the health situation, states the desire to defer to the next term, and asks for advice on the procedure. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. The explanation of the health issue is repetitive, and the request for a refund versus a deferral is slightly contradictory, as the student asks for both. To reach a higher band, the student should provide a more coherent explanation of their preferred outcome and ensure the tone remains consistently formal throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organised into two paragraphs, which is acceptable for a short task. However, the logical flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'that is why i can not sit for a long time'. Cohesive devices are used, but they are somewhat mechanical (e.g., 'that is why', 'although'). The transition between the health issue and the request for a refund is abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the overall coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'exhange into next term' instead of 'defer to the next term' or 'transfer to the next term'. The phrase 'do my study continuously' is also unnatural. While the meaning is clear, the student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles with collocations. To improve, the student should focus on learning topic-specific phrases related to course administration and formal correspondence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in evening class'), incorrect verb forms ('doctor suggest me'), and punctuation issues (e.g., 'Dear sir,' should be 'Dear Sir,'). There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the existing sentences are often run-on or grammatically fragmented. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are noticeable throughout the text. The student needs to focus on subject-verb agreement, proper article usage, and the correct application of formal letter-writing conventions.
