IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to postpone my enrollment for the evening course in your institute.

My name is Shahid and I am currently working part-time in a private company. To enhance my knowledge in marking I have enrolled in a International Marketing Course in your institute. I have realized that I cannot continue this course as my company give me target for this month and I need extra hours to complete this work.

I would love to continue my studies in next batch. As I really want to improve my marketing skill. It is not only provides me the practical experience but also helps me to get promotion in my company.

I would like to give suggestion regarding this matter, if possible could you please transfer my name in the next batch and also my fees. I really appreciate if you could consider my suggestion. Thank you for you time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Shahid Kapoor

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points effectively. You clearly explain your current work situation, state your desire to postpone the course to the next term, and ask for advice on the transfer process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific detail regarding the 'extra hours' or the nature of the 'target' to further develop your ideas, as the explanation is currently quite brief. However, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'not only... but also', which helps link ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as 'As I really want to improve my marketing skill', which is a sentence fragment. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'postpone', 'enrollment', and 'practical experience'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'transfer my name in the next batch' (should be 'transfer my enrollment to the next batch') and 'give suggestion' (should be 'ask for advice' or 'make a request'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over formal business collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'my company give me target' (subject-verb agreement: 'gives me a target') and 'It is not only provides me' (incorrect verb form: 'It not only provides me'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'in International Marketing Course' (should be 'an International Marketing Course'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message.
