IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you that I can not participate in the upcoming classes due to my busy schedule.

Recently, I enrolled in the evening English course. Which would enable in my interpersonal skills. However, suddenly I have too busy schedule, I do work for extra hours due to my finnacial issues. As a result, I am unable to attend classes regularly.

I would continue same course in the next semmester. I want to take defer this time. When I join the next classes, I would have enough money for my tuition fees.

I would appreciate it if you provide me few advice such as how i can transfer my tuition fee for the next semster? or have I fill the defer form?

I hope you will understand my situations and tackle my problems. I will appreciate your concerns and understanding. I look to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

tejwant

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your situation (busy schedule due to financial issues), state your intention to defer to the next term, and ask for advice regarding the transfer of fees and the deferral process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of your financial issues is a bit abrupt. To reach a higher band, ensure that your reasons are explained with slightly more depth and that the flow between your situation and your request for advice is more seamless.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'However' and 'As a result' to connect ideas. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly disjointed, such as the transition between your financial situation and your request to defer. Additionally, some sentences are fragmented or lack clear logical links, such as 'Which would enable in my interpersonal skills,' which is a sentence fragment. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that every sentence is complete will significantly improve the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enrolled,' 'interpersonal skills,' and 'tuition fees.' However, there are several errors in word choice and spelling that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'semmester' (semester), 'finnacial' (financial), and the awkward phrasing 'I want to take defer this time.' While these errors do not prevent the message from being understood, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider range of precise vocabulary to express your needs more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I can not participate' (can't is more natural in some contexts, but 'cannot' is preferred in formal writing), 'I have too busy schedule' (missing article 'a'), and 'have I fill the defer form?' (incorrect auxiliary verb usage). There are also issues with sentence fragments and punctuation. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors limits your score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
