explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you that I can not continue my evening classes.
I was so excited that I will start my new course (AI Technology), which will help me to upgrade my resume and skills. Unfortunately, my manager gave me a new project which I have to complete in afternoon shift. This shift will be from 3pm to 11:30pm. Therefore, I am not able to attend my classes in the evening session.
As I enrolled myself in the January intake. But few unforeseen circumstances prevent me for attending evening classes in this intake. So I have decided to deferral of my January intake to May intake. In this way, I can save my fee and I do not need to spend extra charges.
I am requesting to the management if they can suggest me something else. So that I can save my time.
I hope you will understand my situation. I will waiting for your prompt action.
Yours Sincerely,
Anju Pal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your situation regarding the new work project, stated your desire to defer to the May intake, and requested advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of your ideas is slightly limited. For example, when asking for advice, you could have been more specific about what kind of information you need (e.g., whether there is a penalty fee or a specific form to fill out). Overall, the response is relevant and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Unfortunately', and 'In this way' to connect your ideas. However, the progression between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the transition between the explanation of the work shift and the request for deferral could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the letter follows a standard formal structure, which helps the reader follow your argument without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'January intake' and 'unforeseen circumstances'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'deferral of my January intake' (should be 'defer my January intake') and 'I will waiting for' (grammatical error affecting lexical flow). To reach a higher band, try to use more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I can not continue' (can't), 'I will start' (should be 'I was excited to start'), 'prevent me for attending' (should be 'prevent me from attending'), and 'I am requesting to the management' (should be 'I am asking the management'). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and correct preposition usage after specific verbs.
