IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir
I am witting to request permission for attending Power system study evening course from next semester instead of the current one.
I was extremely glad when I got the chance to attend this advanced course which will be helpful for my current job as well as improve my engineering skills. However, I am currently working on an important project which was initially planned to be completed within this month. But due to some unavoidable circumstances, the project has been extended for three months. While this project is running, it will be difficult for me to concentrate on this course.
Therefore I would like to start my classes after four months from now when the next term will start. This will give me the chance to concentrate better. Since advanced power system study is an essential course for my career, I was to have my full attention during the course period.
Though I have made my decision to take the course from next term, I would appreciate if you could give me any advice about this situation.
I would be waiting for your response.
Yours faithfully
Jamil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your situation regarding the project extension, stated your intention to defer the course to the next term, and politely requested advice on the process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening and closing salutations are perfectly aligned with the formality of the letter (e.g., 'Dear Sir/Madam' or 'Yours sincerely' if the name is unknown).
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use transition words such as 'However', 'Therefore', and 'Since' to connect your ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the request to the explanation and finally to the request for advice. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter. The cohesion is generally clear, though some minor improvements in linking sentences could make the flow even more natural.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly. Phrases like 'unavoidable circumstances' and 'essential course for my career' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are some minor errors, such as 'witting' instead of 'writing' and 'Power system study' which could be more naturally phrased as 'Power Systems course'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating a few more precise collocations or sophisticated synonyms would help elevate the response to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'request permission for attending' (should be 'to attend') and 'I was to have my full attention' (should be 'I want to give my full attention'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the communication remains effective. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence variety shows a good level of control. Focusing on verb patterns and prepositional usage will help reduce these minor errors.
