Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Professor,
I am writing this letter so that you can shed some light on the problem i encountered.
I enrolled in and evening course but after few day i found that the timings were clashing with my job shift timing.Manger denied to change my shift timing as no other employee is available at the moment to swap my shifts with.I agree that the mistake is mine as i should have double checked it first.
I am concerned about my studies as i will be very swamped with work which might lead to lower grades but alongside i also need to do job as to cover my expenses.I think i should drop out the course and take it in the next term instead. Before dropping out i would like to ask you that what you would have done differently if you were in my shoes speaking of which helping me find any alternate solution instead of dropping out the course.
With regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the conflict between your job and the course, state your intention to defer to the next term, and ask for advice. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a professor. However, the development of ideas is slightly limited; for instance, the request for advice is phrased in a somewhat convoluted way ('what you would have done differently if you were in my shoes'), which makes the specific request for guidance on the deferral process slightly less clear than it could be.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your situation. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Before dropping out' and 'With regards'. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by mechanical errors and some awkward phrasing. The transition between the explanation of the problem and the request for advice could be smoother. Additionally, the use of punctuation is inconsistent, which occasionally disrupts the logical progression of your sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enrolled', 'timings', 'clashing', and 'swamped'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'drop out the course' (should be 'drop out of the course') and 'do job' (should be 'work' or 'have a job'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher band scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that, while not impeding communication, are noticeable. Examples include missing articles ('after few day'), capitalization errors ('i', 'Manger'), and subject-verb agreement issues. The sentence 'Manger denied to change my shift timing' is grammatically incorrect. Improving your control over basic sentence construction and proofreading for minor slips will significantly improve your score in this criterion.
