IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you that I have recently enrolled in an evening course in your institute. Unfortunately, I am unable to continue this program in this term.

The main reason is that my work schedule has recently become much busier. I have been given additional responsibilities at work which require me to work longer hours. As a result, I find it extremely difficult to attend the evening classes regularly and complete the required course work on time.

I would like to continue my studies next term when my work schedule get less busier and I could give more attention to my classes and complete the course work. I would really appreciate if I could get extension to next term rather than cancelled.

Could you please advice me how I can apply for the extension, Is there any form that I need to fill or any postponed fees I have to pay to secure my seat in next term.

I look forward to hearing from you and I hope you can help me in this situation.

Yours sincerely,

Lovejeet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work schedule, state your intention to defer the course to the next term, and ask for specific advice regarding the administrative process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all requests are phrased with maximum clarity, as the request for an 'extension' could be slightly more precise in terms of terminology, such as 'deferral'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the explanation of the situation to the proposed solution and finally the request for advice. Cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'As a result', and 'I look forward to' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The structure is coherent and easy to follow throughout. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the flow of information is smooth, meeting the requirements for a high band in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using formal expressions like 'inform you', 'additional responsibilities', and 'regularly'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'get less busier' (should be 'becomes less busy') and 'postponed fees' (should be 'deferral fees' or 'administrative charges'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the use of more sophisticated, natural-sounding vocabulary. Expanding your range of formal collocations would help elevate your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the majority of the content is clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'my work schedule get less busier' (subject-verb agreement and comparative error) and 'I would really appreciate if I could get extension' (missing article 'an'). Additionally, the sentence 'Is there any form that I need to fill or any postponed fees I have to pay to secure my seat in next term' is punctuated as a question but lacks a question mark at the end. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout.
