IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am currently enrolled in Digital marketing course on the evening batch. Firstly, it has been difficult to manage for me to manage the schedule with a full-time job and a part-time intern as a caregiver in the night. The limited time I get is in the evening which is now occupied with this course. Unfortunately, I would like to discontinue this course for the sometime.
Typically, I have been working full-time as a Data analyst and it has been 2 years of my work experience. However, I cannot afford to compromise my place in the company. Moreover, last year, I started a course in gerontology and it is near to the end. Therefore, after my job as a intern finishes, I will get back to this course.
Lastly, I request you to enrol me in the next semester. If you have any suggestions or alternative way to make it work. Please, do let me know and I assure you that I will consider your advice on this matter.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your situation regarding your job and other studies, stated your desire to postpone the course, and requested advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an instructor. However, the explanation of your schedule is slightly repetitive and could be more concise to improve clarity. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader understands exactly what you are requesting. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your work commitments and your inability to attend the course is explained more fluently.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For instance, the jump between your job description and your gerontology course could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally accurate, though some sentence structures are a bit disjointed, which slightly affects the flow. Overall, the letter is easy to follow and the paragraphing is appropriate for this task type.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enrolled', 'discontinue', 'compromise', and 'gerontology'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'intern as a caregiver' (should be 'internship') and 'for the sometime' (which is grammatically incorrect). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations. You have a sufficient vocabulary to convey your message effectively, but expanding your range of formal expressions would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'manage for me to manage' (redundant), 'intern as a caregiver' (incorrect noun usage), and 'alternative way to make it work. Please, do let me know' (the second part is a sentence fragment). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant phrasing. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you move toward a higher band.
