IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Brown,

I am writing to inform you that I cannot continue my evening course and i would like to take that next term.

I am enrolled in evening biology course but I found that I will be very busy during that time. This is because I have some doctors appointments and some weddings. Consequently, I cannot attend classes for my evening studies. In addition, I decided to take that course next term rather than continue now.

I would really appreciate it if you could guide me about this from your prospective as you are professional in this field. I will consider your advise as a priority.

I hope you will take some time to this situation and give me an appropriate advise as this is a important part of my career. I look forward to receiving your response.

Yours Sincerly ,

Manjinder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: explaining the situation, stating the desire to defer, and asking for advice. However, the response is 144 words long, failing to meet the 150-word minimum requirement. This under-length impacts the development of ideas, as the explanation for the absence (doctor's appointments and weddings) is quite brief and lacks sufficient detail to fully flesh out the situation. To improve, you should expand on your reasons and provide more context to ensure the letter meets the length requirement and demonstrates a more thorough engagement with the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Consequently' and 'In addition' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and the transition between the explanation of the situation and the request for advice could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, but the overall progression of ideas is somewhat limited by the brevity of the content. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, expanded focus would improve the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms such as 'enrolled', 'professional', and 'career'. However, there are some errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'advise' (used as a noun, should be 'advice') and 'Sincerly' (spelling error). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure that you distinguish correctly between word forms, such as the noun 'advice' and the verb 'advise'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including the lowercase 'i', the missing article in 'evening biology course', and the incorrect preposition in 'take some time to this situation'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and proofreading for minor slips like capitalization and spelling, which will help you achieve a higher level of control over your writing.
